Like Rumi from Persia or Kabir from North India, Jnaneshwar, considered the greatest of the Marathi poet-saints, captures the power and knowledge of his spiritual attainment in a few spare words. His poetry offers an exquisite combination of knowledge of the truth and love for the divine. These poems have been read, recited, and revered by the Marathi-speaking population of central India for nearly 800 years. His poems have not been readily available in English. This book presents original English translations of a selection of Jnaneshwar’s poems, as an introduction for Western readers.
ABOUT THE TRANSLATOR Anand Mundra was born and raised in Mahatma Gandhi’s ashrams in India. His father, who was secretary to Gandhi’s spiritual heir, Vinoba Bhave, sang Jnaneshwar’s songs to Anand throughout his early childhood. A resident of the United States and former aerospace engineer, Anand now brings the mytical, philosophical treasures of the Marathi language to the West.
